For this no-sew upcycle project, I used a relaxed silhouette t-shirt that was 100% cotton-slug knit. It was perfect shape to work with because is was not too tight and not too big.

The blend of cotton material with slub texture creates nice structure to maintain the racerback and twist element. So if you have a similar t-shirt, then go for it!

DIY Cutout Twist Tank Top Upcycle Tips:

Upcycling an old t-shirt without sewing is super fun beginners DIY clothing project. The cutout detail with swivel method is one of the no sew hacks that makes this look stand out from any other t-shirt upcycle projects.

To accomplish this t-shirt to tank transformation, read through the quick tips and t-shirt cutting techniques so that you avoid any mistakes.

  • Fabric Scissors: Start this project with a pair of extra sharp fabric scissors in hand. The raw edges are kept as is, so it’s critical to make clean and crisp cut lines along the armhole and racerback. You can easily sharpen your scissors, by cutting through a piece of folded aluminum foil as a quick fix to straighten the edges of the blade. Avoid using paper scissors to cut clothing.
  • Fabric Chalk: Always draw lines inside the garment. Simply flip the t-shirt inside out and follow the measurement guide to create new lines as indicated. In order to remove any chalk marks on the fabric, dampen a rag with water and rub gently to remove the wax markings.
  • Measuring Tape: When measuring curved lines, measuring tape is a handy tool to ascertain the size of difficult areas. The tape is flexible and easily bends, which is why it has become the perfect alternative to use for connecting the points.
  • Fabric Glue: For this no sew project, we will be using fabric glue for clothes to re-join the shoulder seams. Apply a small amount on the back side of the tank top, then overlap the piece and let it completely dry. Avoid applying too much glue because it will bleed through the fabric and take a long time to dry. Test the adhesive on a piece of scrap fabric to find the best results for the material you are working with.
